Exhibition Opening: Contemporary KZN_Monochrome
“Black and white are absolute… expressing the most delicate vibration, the most profound tranquillity and unlimited profundity.”
Shiko Munakata
On Friday 22 November 2019, I was honoured to officially open the Contemporary KZN_Monochrome Exhibition as part of the Yard 41 Christmas festivities.
This collaboration with Reid Gallery was born out of the need for South African artists to be afforded an opportunity to exhibit their beautiful, proudly South African art in a way which did not require huge expense or a huge amount of administrative time or effort on their part. As our inaugural exhibition of this nature, we were thrilled to have 14 talented artists all of whom bring a different expression and style to our South African monochrome collection.
I would like to thank each of these artists for trusting us in this process and for being part of what we know will be a wonderful exhibition. And also for the hours of behind the scenes work and courage in sharing their unique art with the world.
“Art is what we call the thing an artist does. It’s not the medium or the oil or the price or whether it hangs on a wall or you eat it. What matters, what makes it art, is that the person who made it overcame the resistance, ignored the voice of doubt and made something worth making. Something risky. Something human. Art is not in the eye of the beholder. It’s in the soul of the artist.”
Our artists for this exhibition include:
Gert Rautenbach, Jen Milborrow, Stephen Pryke, Rayne Hampson, Lieze Meyer, Sarah Pryke, Lucy Erasmus, Catherine Raphael, Nikki Stanton, Leigh Stokes, Kerry Michau as well as the husband and wife combination of Tess and Vince Reid, both artists and the owners of Reid Gallery.
Our exhibition will be on display until end February 2020 so please do visit again and bring holiday visitors and others who may enjoy the art.
We would love your feedback on the exhibition and you are welcome to get in touch via email or via any of our social media platforms – Instagram or Facebook.
Limited editions of each of the pieces are available to purchase as prints, either framed or unframed, from Reid Gallery at Yard 41 or alternatively are available via our Contemporary KZN_Monochrome Shopfront.
With thanks to Welmoed Estate for their wine sponsorship, as well as to Zenoa Photography for capturing these beautiful images.
